Reading the New Testament should be approached with respect as you are approaching God as you read His word.
Allow 30 minutes at the same time each day to read your New Testament and select a quiet place with good lighting where you won’t be distracted, turn your mobile phone to silent and sit comfortably.
Familiarise yourself with your New Testament. Look at the Table of Contents page located in the first few pages and note that it is organised into books and note their different names. At the bottom of the Table of Contents there are a series of helps or aids which provide for additional reading. Flip through your New Testament and note that each book is organised into chapters and verses.
At the top of a page in a diary, notebook, or piece of paper, note down the date and time, the name of book, chapter number and verses that you will be reading at the top of the page.
Write down on that page the following questions separating each by 5 or 6 lines
1. What do I learn about God?
2. What do I learn about people?
3. What do I learn about myself?
4. What does God want me to do?
As you read God's word you will gain a great benefit from reflecting on what God is saying to you in respect to those four questions and noting your responses from your heart and feelings as God reveals Himself to you.
Before you start to read your New Testament, close your eyes and say a simple prayer "Father God, I come before you to read your word and ask that you reveal yourself to me during this time, help me to grow spiritually and in my walk with Jesus, may I know Your love, joy and peace. In the name of Jesus I pray. Amen."
If this is the first time for you in reading the New Testament the following reading plan may assist you.
Plan to read an entire book of your New Testament and read one chapter a day so that you will gradually progress to complete that Book.
Start by reading the books in the following order Luke, Acts, Romans.
Once you have read those books then start again from Matthew and continue to through the books in the order they are in your New Testament.
After each time of your reading the day's Chapter of New Testament reflect on your heart responses and feelings that you wrote down in your notebook making additional notes of things that God brings into your mind, heart and spirit.
Then close your eyes and say a closing prayer "Father God, I thank you for the time spent in reading your word and learning about your plan for the world and for me. I pray that you will fill my mind, my heart and my spirit with Your word. Thank you for sending the Lord Jesus to redeem me from my sin and help me to continue in my walk with Jesus. In the name of Jesus I pray. Amen."
